Shaw Heights
Baptist Church was the culmination of a dream by many people,
primarily the congregation of Eastside Baptist Church in Sumter. In
1962, Eastside sent a delegation to survey the area around Shaw Air
Force Base and then bought three acres of land along Highway
441.
There were thirty persons at the first
service of the mission church and it grew over the months until
March 1964, when it constituted as a church with a total of one
hundred and four members.
The church has always had a large
military presence. The number of civilian families has always been
in the minority.
The primary mission of the church has
been to give the military families a local church option for worship
and support while away from their
homes. |
